What an AI Visibility Tool Is and How to Choose Yours
More people now ask a chatbot instead of searching Google. Knowing whether those models name you is already part of the marketing job.
For twenty years the question was simple: am I on Google's first page? Today there is a second question that matters just as much. When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini to recommend a supplier, an app or a clinic, does your name come up? AI visibility tools exist to answer that with data instead of guesswork.
The underlying idea is straightforward. These models do not hand you a ranking of ten links, they give one written answer with two or three brands inside it. If you are not in that answer, you do not exist for that user. And unlike Google, there is no official dashboard telling you how they see you.
What it actually measures
A serious tool does more than check whether your brand shows up. It usually tracks three different things:
- Mentions. How often your brand comes up across a set of real questions from your sector, and where it sits inside the answer.
- Sentiment. How the model describes you. Being named as the recommended option is very different from being the expensive alternative or the one with problems.
- Sources. Where the model pulls its information from. Knowing which pages it cites tells you where it pays to be present.
The value comes from repeating those queries over time. A single snapshot is worth little; what helps is seeing whether you rise or fall after you publish content, land press or change your site.
What to look for when choosing
Not every tool covers the same ground, and the gaps matter more than they seem.
Engines included
Some only watch ChatGPT. For a real picture you want at least ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, because their answers do not line up. Claude, from Anthropic, is increasingly used inside applications, so adding it as a fourth engine fills in context.
Frequency
Models change their answers often. A monthly check falls short. Daily or near-daily tracking is the sensible bar, so you catch drops in time.
Language
If you work in Spanish, measure in Spanish. A brand can look great in English and vanish when the question is asked in another language, because the model leans on different sources.
Price and trial
Look for clear plans and the option to try without commitment. Tools like Bee LLM, for instance, offer a free plan with no card, plans at 19.90 euros a month, and measure daily in Spanish. Weigh what you pay against the number of brands, questions and engines included.
Before you pay, check
- Which engines it covers (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude)
- How often it measures
- Whether it measures in your language
- Whether it separates mentions, sentiment and sources
- Whether there is a real free trial
Who it makes sense for
Not everyone needs it the same way. A consumer brand with strong rivals gains a lot: it wants to know if it gets recommended against them. A SaaS or an agency uses it to prove results to clients and to catch when a model spreads outdated information. A small local business can benefit if its customers already ask AI for recommendations nearby.
If no one ever asks a chatbot about what you sell, it may not be your priority yet. But that line moves fast, and arriving late costs more than arriving early.
What to do with the data
The tool tells you where you stand; the work is yours. If you do not show up, you usually lack content that answers your sector's questions directly, presence in the sources the model cites, or simply the reputation to back the mention. Measuring is the first honest step: without data, optimizing for AI is shooting in the dark.
