Track your brand in Google's AI Overviews

It is the box Google puts above the normal results. Plenty of people read that and never scroll. If you are not in it, you do not exist for them, even if you rank first just underneath.

What is going on, in plain words

AI Overviews show up on a growing share of searches, and they sit exactly where the eye lands first. Anyone who finds their answer there never reaches the links.

That makes this the most frustrating engine of the nine. You can hold the top spot on Google and still be missing from the box people actually read. And no classic rank tracker will warn you, because your ranking has not moved at all.

If your name is in that answer, you get the customer. If it is not, you never find out: there is no list of results to check your position in and usually no click either, so nothing shows up in your website statistics.

Ranking is not enough, and there is a study that measures it

Japanese researchers took 714 pages quoted by the AI summary and compared them with normal Google results sitting in exactly the same position. With position held equal, the quoted ones still answered the question better.

The gap looks small, but it held across all 714 pairs and survived two statistical checks. The practical conclusion: ranking gets you into the room, answering the exact question gets you quoted. We go through it in full in this article.

What it takes away, in numbers

Worth knowing the size of the problem. An analysis from the University of Washington across 52,262 Wikipedia articles estimated that AI summaries cut daily organic traffic by 15% to 17% on average. A figure from Ahrefs quoted in the same review puts it at 34.5% fewer clicks.

And they do not appear on a handful of searches: in the study comparing 11,500 real queries, 51.5% of them produced an AI summary above the normal results. There is also one very actionable detail: when a site blocks Google's AI crawler, that site gets retrieved noticeably less in the summaries, even though its content is still available.

How we measure it

We ask your 10 questions to AI Overviews continuously and store every answer whole: whether it names you, where, in what tone, next to which competitors, which pages it read to build the answer and what it searched for first. You read the month, not the day.

The full method, with the research behind why it is measured this way and what can actually be changed, is in how we measure whether an AI names your brand. And there is nothing to install on your site.

Questions people ask us

Why does it have to be measured every day?

Because these engines do not answer the same thing twice: only three to five out of every ten pages they use repeat from one query to the next. A single answer tells you almost nothing; how many days out of thirty you came up does. It is set out with the data in how we measure.

Can I try it for free?

Yes. The free plan asks your questions to ChatGPT every day at no cost and with no card, so you can see how it works. The other engines come with the paid plans.

How is this different from AI Mode?

The AI summary appears inside normal results, at the very top. AI Mode is a separate tab where you talk to Google like a chat. They are two different surfaces giving different answers, and we measure them separately.

Does Search Console cover this?

Only partly. Since June 2026 its AI performance report gives impressions, pages, countries and devices, but no clicks, no click-through rate, no queries, and it does not separate AI Overviews from AI Mode. It tells you traffic exists, not whether you get named.

Find out your own numbers, not the industry average

We ask your questions to AI Overviews and the other assistants and keep the history, so you can see how many days you came up and who came up instead of you. Free plan, no card needed. Full detail on the pricing page.
