Seven Mistakes That Keep You Out of AI Answers

Showing up in AI answers does not depend on a secret trick. It is usually lost to basic mistakes that have a fix.

When a brand does not show up in ChatGPT or Gemini answers, the first reaction is usually to assume a trick is missing. In practice the cause is more boring. There are mistakes that repeat across many sites and quietly bury work that was already good. These are the seven we see most often.

One. blocking AI bots in robots.txt

Some teams add rules that stop crawlers like GPTBot or Perplexity, sometimes without knowing, inherited from a template. If you do not want your content feeding models, that is a fair choice. But if you then complain about not being cited, there is a contradiction. Check your robots.txt and decide on purpose.

Two. burying the answer at the end

Content built to hook the reader with a long intro works poorly for AI. Models reward text that answers the question early and clearly. Put the conclusion up top and expand afterwards.

Three. watching only your brand name

Checking whether you are named is fine, but most people do not ask about you. They ask about a category: best invoicing software for freelancers, for example. If you do not appear in those generic questions, you are absent from the moment the decision happens.

Four. ignoring Gemini

Many measure ChatGPT and forget Gemini, which is built into Google and Android. In Spain that reach is huge and silent. Leaving it out means giving up a large share of real queries.

Five. measuring once a month

AI answers change from one day to the next. A monthly snapshot cannot tell you whether a drop was a blip or a trend. Useful measurement is frequent, ideally daily, so you can separate noise from signal.

Signs you are measuring badly

  • you only check your brand, never the category.
  • you test a single engine.
  • you do it by hand and irregularly.
  • you keep no history to compare.

Six. skipping structured data

Schema guarantees nothing, but it helps a model understand what each thing is: a product, an FAQ, a review, an author. Without those cues, your information competes at a disadvantage against those who provide them.

Seven. copying what competitors do

If you reproduce content that already exists, you give the model one less reason to cite you. What gets cited tends to be what adds something of its own: a data point, an honest comparison, a concrete experience. Originality is not decoration, it is what makes you recommendable.

How to climb out

None of these mistakes needs a big team to fix. Start by unblocking the bots if that is your intent, move answers to the start of the text, and widen what you measure to include category questions and several engines. Then turn measurement into a habit instead of an occasional review. The difference between showing up and not is rarely magic. It is usually order.
