How ChatGPT Search Works and What It Means for Your Brand

ChatGPT no longer only answers from what it learned. Sometimes it browses live and cites sources. That difference affects you directly.

For a while, ChatGPT answered only from what it had learned during training. It was like talking to someone very well read but offline: it knew a lot, though nothing past a certain date. With ChatGPT Search that changed. Now, for many questions, the model goes out to the internet in the moment, reads pages and builds the answer from what it finds.

Two very different ways to answer

They are worth telling apart because they affect you differently. When ChatGPT answers from memory, it repeats what it absorbed during training. There your brand appears if it was part of that knowledge, and you cannot change it in the short term. When ChatGPT browses live, instead, it reads current sources and usually shows links. That second mode is the one you can influence this week, because it depends on what is published now.

How to tell which one it is using

The clearest clue is citations. If the answer shows linked sources, it almost always browsed. If it gives a polished explanation with no link, it probably drew from memory. Questions about current events, prices or recent comparisons push toward browsing.

What it looks at when browsing

When it searches live, ChatGPT behaves much like a search engine that also summarizes. It retrieves several relevant pages, reads them and chooses which to draw from. To enter that selection, the usual things done well help: content that answers the question clearly, recent and reliable information, and a structure that is easy to follow.

What favors being cited

  • answer the question early, no detours.
  • verifiable dates and data.
  • allow the crawler in robots.txt.
  • original content, not a copy of what exists.

What to do, without tricks

There is no secret lever to force a citation. What works is unspectacular. Make sure your crawler is not blocked, because if ChatGPT cannot read your page, it cannot cite it. Write with real questions in mind, with direct answers that can be lifted in a couple of sentences. And keep information current, because live browsing rewards the recent over the old.

There is something important to accept: you do not control the answer, you only raise your odds. The same prompt can cite different sources on two consecutive days. That is why it makes sense to check fairly often whether you appear and with which source, rather than trusting a single query. Live browsing shifts, and what did not show yesterday may show today, and the other way round.

ChatGPT Search is neither an impenetrable black box nor a lottery. It is, largely, a search engine with a summary, and almost everything you already knew about publishing well applies. The difference is that the result is no longer a list of links the user filters, but a paragraph that decides for them. Being inside that paragraph is the goal.
