How to Show Up in Google AI Overviews

Google now answers many searches with its own summary above the links. Showing up there depends, in large part, on the SEO you already know.

AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries from Google that appear at the top of many search results. Instead of showing only the list of links, Google writes an answer from several sources and cites them with links to the side.

For a brand or a website, this raises two things at once: an opportunity (being inside the summary almost everyone sees) and a risk (the user keeps the answer and does not click). It is worth treating both honestly.

What they are and where they come from

The AI Overview does not invent from scratch. It selects and summarizes content from pages Google already crawls and indexes. In practice, the sources it cites tend to be among those ranking well for that query. That is why the link with classic SEO is tight: without a ranking base, it is hard to get into the summary.

How to appear

There is no button to switch it on, but these practices raise the odds of being one of the cited sources.

  1. Answer concrete questions. Identify the real doubts in your field and answer them directly, with the answer in the first sentences of the section.
  2. Use structured data. Schema markup (FAQ, product, article, ratings) helps Google understand what each thing is and reuse it.
  3. Build authority. Trustworthy content, quality links and mentions, identifiable authors. Google tends to cite sources it trusts.
  4. Keep content current. For many queries, recent and exact wins. Review figures, dates and prices.
  5. Cover the query thoroughly. Content that solves the main question and the related ones has more chance of being the summary's source.

What helps

  • Solid base SEO: if you do not rank, you are rarely cited in the overview.
  • Direct answers and structured data.
  • Authority and up-to-date content.

The effect on clicks, no sugar-coating

Here it is time to be realistic. When Google answers at the top, a share of users do not need to enter any website. That reduces clicks on many informational searches, especially those solved with a single sentence.

Appearing in the AI Overview gives brand visibility even when it does not always give a visit. Not everything is measured in traffic.

The sensible response is not to give up, but to adjust expectations and strategy:

What kind of queries trigger the summary

Not every search shows an AI Overview, and understanding the pattern helps you prioritize. Google tends to trigger it more in some cases than others.

Review your keywords through this lens. For informational ones, get ready to compete for the summary. For transactional ones, traditional SEO still rules.

Do not neglect the rest of the page

Even if the AI Overview takes the top, the usual results are still below it. A share of users scroll down, ignore the summary and click a link, especially when they want to cross-check or go deeper. So continuing to work your classic organic position is not incompatible with chasing the summary: it is the safety net that catches those who are not satisfied with the quick answer. Optimize for both zones at once and you spread the risk.

Measure your presence

Check for your key queries whether Google shows an AI Overview and whether it cites you. This information shifts and is worth tracking. Platforms like Bee LLM monitor brand visibility in AI engines, but you can start by reviewing your main searches by hand once a month.

The change is real and still settling. The reasonable stance is to keep doing good SEO, phrase content so it is easy to cite and accept that part of the value is now collected in presence, not only in clicks.
