How to Measure the ROI of Your AI Visibility
Showing up in AI answers is nice, but sooner or later someone asks what it brings to the business. Better to have an answer.
AI visibility is easy to see and hard to bill. You can confirm that ChatGPT recommends you and still not know what that is worth in euros. Accept that discomfort from the start: attribution here is imperfect. But imperfect does not mean useless. There are several ways to approach the return without fooling yourself.
Referral traffic from AI
When a model cites you with a link, some of those clicks show up in your analytics as referrals from domains like chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. It is the most direct signal, though incomplete: many conversations never end in a click, because the person keeps the name and looks you up later. Even so, watching that traffic gives you a floor, a minimum figure you know is real.
Assisted mentions
Much of AI value is not a click, it is a memory. Someone asks for options, sees your brand among two or three, and weeks later searches for you directly or types your name into Google. That path does not show in a single analytics row, but it leaves traces: rises in branded search, more direct traffic, more people arriving already knowing who you are. Crossing the rise in AI mentions with those curves gives a reasonable picture.
Signals worth crossing
- referral traffic from AI domains.
- branded search volume over time.
- direct traffic and its trend.
- answers to how did you hear about us in your forms.
Asking customers
The most underrated source is also the simplest: ask. One line in the signup form or the first call, how did you hear about us, with an option for AI or assistant, gathers in months what no tool deduces alone. People increasingly answer things like ChatGPT recommended you. It is not fine statistics, but it is direct testimony, and it counts.
An honest framework
The sensible move is not to chase one perfect figure but to triangulate. If referral traffic rises, branded searches grow and some customers mention AI on arrival, you have three arrows pointing the same way. None proves anything alone, together they convince.
| method | what it captures | limit |
|---|---|---|
| referral traffic | direct clicks from AI | misses click free recall |
| assisted mentions | effect on brand and direct | correlation, not cause |
| asking the customer | real testimony | partial sample |
Measuring AI return resembles measuring a billboard twenty years ago: nobody had the exact number, but everyone could tell whether it worked. The difference is that today you have more digital traces to confirm it. Use them carefully and without promising precision that does not exist.
