Perplexity and ChatGPT, Differences That Affect Your Visibility

Although both answer questions, Perplexity and ChatGPT build their replies in different ways. That difference decides how and when you appear.

It is easy to lump Perplexity and ChatGPT together: both answer in natural language and both can recommend brands. But under the hood they work differently, and those differences directly affect when and how your business appears. Understanding them avoids spending effort on the wrong lever.

This is not about declaring a winner. It is about knowing what each one needs to name you and splitting your effort accordingly.

How Perplexity works

Perplexity was born as a search oriented answer engine. Given a question, it searches the web right then, selects a few sources and writes a reply citing them with visible links. It is, in essence, a search engine that summarises and attributes.

For your visibility this has a clear consequence: appearing depends heavily on being among the pages Perplexity finds and deems relevant at the moment of the query. If your content ranks well and answers the question with quotable data, you have a real chance of showing up as a source.

How ChatGPT works

ChatGPT starts from a model trained on a huge amount of text up to a cutoff date. That base gives it "from memory" knowledge about brands and topics, without searching anything. When needed, it can trigger live search to top up with fresh information, but much of its answers rest on what it already learned.

That is why your accumulated footprint matters in ChatGPT: how many times and in what tone the web has mentioned you over time. A brand with sustained presence across many sources tends to be "in its memory", while a newcomer depends more on search being triggered.

The difference in one line

  • Perplexity: visibility goes to whoever is a good quotable source right now.
  • ChatGPT: visibility goes to whoever has accumulated reputation, reinforced by search when triggered.

What it means for your strategy

These differences do not force a choice, but they do call for balance. It pays to work both fresh, quotable content, which helps in Perplexity and in ChatGPT's search, and sustained presence in reliable sources, which feeds the latter's memory.

For Perplexity

Think classic SEO with a twist. Answer specific questions on clear pages, with data, figures and statements that can be quoted as they are. A tidy structure and text that says things directly make it easier for the engine to treat you as a source.

For ChatGPT

Build presence over time. Get your brand to appear, well described, across many sites the model considers reliable. Reviews, press mentions, consistent profiles and your own content repeating the central message. It is slower work but more stable.

Measure them separately

The usual mistake is assuming that if you appear in one, you appear in all. You do not. A brand can be a regular source in Perplexity and almost invisible in ChatGPT, or the other way around. So it pays to check each engine with your real queries and note where you show up and where you do not.

Doing it by hand gives a snapshot. To track the evolution there are tools such as Bee LLM that measure several engines daily in parallel, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, so you see where you do well and where you have a gap. With that map you split your effort where it is most needed, instead of treating every model as if it were the same.
