The Future of SEO With AI, No Hype

SEO is not vanishing because of AI. It is shifting and expanding. A sober look at what changes and what stays the same.

Every few years someone announces the death of SEO. First it was branded content, then social media, then voice search. Now it is generative AI's turn. And as always, reality is more boring and more interesting at once. SEO is not dying. It is changing shape and spreading across more places.

It is worth saying without drama. People still look for information, compare options and make decisions. What changes is the path that journey takes and how much of it happens inside a chat rather than a results page.

From finding links to getting answers

For twenty years the goal was to appear among the ten blue links. Now a share of queries ends with a direct answer from ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, with the user clicking nothing. This is called zero click search, and it has been growing since before AI.

That does not mean your site stops mattering. It means your content can shape the answer even if nobody visits it. The AI reads, summarises and sometimes cites you. Your job becomes earning that citation.

SEO expands, it does not shrink

Two acronyms are worth knowing without obsessing over them. GEO, generative engine optimisation, is about influencing what models produce. AEO, answer engine optimisation, aims to be the source the assistant picks when it replies. These are not separate from SEO. They are extensions.

Three fronts that coexist

  • Classic SEO: stay well ranked in traditional search, which still drives most traffic.
  • GEO: get your information to models clearly and consistently.
  • AEO: be the cited source when an assistant answers a question in your sector.

Which metrics gain weight

The reigning SEO metric was always ranking and organic traffic. They still matter, but they no longer tell the whole story. If a customer decides to buy because ChatGPT recommended you, that impact never shows up in your rankings report.

Classic metricMetric gaining weight
Search positionMention frequency in AI
Organic clicksShare of voice against competitors
Traffic per keywordCitations as a source in answers

Measuring this is harder because AI answers vary and there is no official dashboard like the ones search engines provide. That is why tools appear, Bee LLM among them, that query the assistants regularly and record whether they mention you and how.

Which skills gain value

Here is my opinion, with its caveats. The usual technical skills do not expire. Structure, speed and clean data help both the search engine and the model. But the pendulum swings towards content that says something true and useful.

The risk of believing every headline

Here is the uncomfortable caveat. Every week a study appears claiming organic traffic will collapse by some specific percentage, and another saying the exact opposite. The honest truth is that nobody yet knows how the split will settle. Models change, search engines fold in AI answers and then walk them back, and people's habits move slowly.

Faced with that uncertainty, the worst strategy is reacting to every headline. The second worst is ignoring everything and carrying on as if it were 2018. The sensible middle ground is to watch your own data, both from search and from AI, and shift resources slowly towards where you see your customers actually deciding.

Diversify your visibility

If all your visibility depends on a single channel, any change exposes you. Having a presence in search engines, in AI answers and in sources both consult reduces that risk. It is not about putting every egg in the fashionable basket, but about spreading sensibly.

What does not change

Beneath the noise, the underlying principle stays intact. Whoever publishes reliable, well ordered, useful information has the advantage. That advantage used to earn you rankings. Now it also earns you mentions. The channel changes, the merit does not. And that, honestly, is good news for those who work well and bad news for those who only wanted shortcuts.
